Tips for Choosing the Best Real Estate Agent for Your Property Search

Searching for a new home or property in Maryland is an exciting time. Once the paperwork side of things is taken care of and you have a pre-approval letter in hand, it’s time to get down to the business of browsing the market in order to find that perfect spot for you and your family. But how do you find the right agent to assist you in this adventure? Let’s walk through a few helpful tips.

Ask Friends and Family

Most likely, you know someone personally who has recently bought or sold a home in your area. Rather than turning to online reviews, consider asking those around you for a recommendation with regard to a real estate agent. If they had a good experience, you’ll have a great place to start simply by contacting the agent they used. Whether it is someone in your extended family or a co-worker, ask around and it should be easy to pick up a few referrals.

Find an Active Agent

You want to work with someone (like Dan Hozhabri!) who is a full-time real estate agent in Maryland and deals with the market conditions on a day to day basis. Some people keep their real estate license active but only handle a transaction or two throughout the year – that’s okay, but it probably is not the type of agent you want to work with on your property search. You are using an agent to access their connections and market knowledge, and both of those things may be lacking when not serving clients frequently.

Knows Your Target Market

Even before you have started to work with an agent, you probably have a good idea of where you would like to live. If that is the case, look for an agent with experience closing deals in that area. When talking to prospective agents, ask them specifically about your target market and see if they know the area without having to do research. Local knowledge can go a long way when trying to track down the right property for you and your family.

Make a Connection

Sometimes, you just know after a few minutes of conversation whether or not an individual is someone you can work with easily. Does their personality and overall attitude match up nicely with your own? Some agents are energetic and highly communicative, while others are more laid back. There isn’t a right or wrong with regard to personality type, as long as their personality is a good fit with you.

Do Some Homework

We mentioned earlier that you can find options for real estate agents by asking friends and family, and that certainly is a good option. With that said, you can also leverage the power of the internet to your advantage. Once you have your list narrowed down, find info about each agent online to see how they are viewed by past clients. A great agent will almost certainly have a long list of satisfied clients singing their praises.
